STX files represent RAW images created with SBIG CCD cameras. They are part of a group of formats known as Santa Barbara Instruments Astronomical Images, also including ST5, ST6, ST7 and ST8. Apart from astronomy, SBIG cameras can also be used in medical imaging, color photometry and a few other scientific and industrial sectors.
