An ST8 file most likely contains an astronomical image shot with an SBIG CCD camera, model ST-X. Such cameras specialize in astronomical imaging, but can be used in a few other scientific and industrial sectors as well, including medical imaging and color photometry. ST8 is included in a group of formats known as Santa Barbara Instruments Astronomical Images, together with ST7, ST6, ST5 and STX.
